A Keyhole Garden is drought-hardy soil on steroids, named for its aerial ‘key hole’ shape. Built up and in a circle, the entire garden is amended and watered via a center compost basket where kitchen waste and dishwater is easily discarded daily.
This garden is minimal maintenance and at the right height — 3 feet tall — and diameter for daily harvesting.
Shaped a bit like a volcano, it is built with 100% recycled materials including the 3-ft high wall. Organics are layered purposely, with much water added with each layer, broken down by the microbes and underworld beings. Rich, living soil is always the result.
Plants are densely placed on top to minimize erosion and water loss through evaporation.
