My style of gardening is a marriage of Mel Bartholomew’s Square Foot Garden and Patricia Lanza’s Lasagna Garden methods. The Texas drought of 2011 proved that the lasagna method of building soil works best in zero water conditions, but lacking long rows of one crop, the square foot staggered planting density maximizes plant growth while minimizing insect infestations within the same space.

The result is a lasagna square foot garden space: no borders needed, ‘serendipity’ for maximum volunteer establishment, and amendment with 100% organics. With rich living soil resulting from the slower, more natural breakdown of layered leaves and greens the need for supplemental watering and hard work getting a garden ready to plant is all but abolished.

Why bring compost to the garden when you can garden right in the compost?
